The idea of art as a didactic thing, a thing intended to serve the community, was absolutely commonplace in the Renaissance:
Of course, in order to have a society in which public art serves the good, true, and beautiful, it is necessary to have the following things:
- A shared sense of the good, true and beautiful
- A state motivated to build those things
And the state is nothing more than the ritualization of a society’s ruling classes, so those powerful in society must perceive a need to create art that serves society as it is, and not society as an abstraction of their utopian visions. Modern and Post-Modern Society is animated by Revolutionary Impulses: so whatever is exists only to be overcome. This leads to chaos, which creates opportunities for Modern Medicis to make money, but not to make anything lasting.
From this we can also derive a useful distinction between art and pornography. Art can be erotic, and remain art, so long as eroticism is integrated into the larger narrative, put in service of meditations of truth. Eroticism that serves no purpose other than false titillation (one cannot fuck an image) is pornography. Potter Stewart was right, you intuit the difference between Michalangelo’s David and Pornhub almost instantaneously.
In any case, the video is thoughtful, and worth watching.
